about

this one was written with the year 2020 (specifically) in mind. there on my patio, missing my friends, i started tapping the keypad screen of my iphone on the notes application. i wanted to write of something i found to be as close as a memory and as near as the following breath. a recognition and nod to the past and an anticipatory meeting to come. like the lean in for the embrace that distance keeping us from. but soon will come.
a friend of mine invited me to write a few poems to be published in a project/book called “A Light that Never Goes Out.” this was a collaborative effort with entrees from writers all over the nation. the theme was hope.
i started sharing with friends over recordings and finally the time came for my friends Luke Blanchard and i to really workshop this poem to see what it could sound like accompanied by music. he spent time with my voice memo and the words from my note and found the sounds that, honestly, made it straight to the track. i still tear up toward the end. it was and still is perfect in my opinion and Brandon Shattuck really brought it to life in the studio.

lyrics

Our stories, our memories of the past
Time's relentless imprint on our tattered souls
The currency of remembrance
The investments made for the greater portion of our days
The brushing of shoulders
The inside jokes between the best of us, our dear ones
The scars we've hidden
The cherished thorn
The wanderings of our mind when the heart is heavy
The innovation found in boredom, yes
The ease of not overthinking this [breathe]
Breath, this lingering of moments
In silence
The calm before the storm
Of your fury or your joy
Brace yourself for the impact of this..
It's all we have.
The look in a lover's eye when you both realize it's all going to be ok
Though tomorrow still hides behind the curtain of our existence
These hands hold reminders of the bumps and bruises of yesterdays
The hope that keeps us still and ever invites us to wonder again
Here and now is holding our end
And still its where we begin.
